To coincide with the next market on May 26th, everyone interested is invited to come along to the official opening of the Centres newest room-for-hire, once a snooker club room, then for years a store room and now “The Reynolds Room”, in memory of the late Peter Reynolds, a tirelessmember of the management committee in recent years and fondly remembered by the present committee. The room will be opened by Councillor Peter Medlicott at around 11.00am.
And a bit of advance notice on a great gig coming at the Centre in July…London-based African band Harare, led by Kudaushe Matimba, a former member of the legendary Bhundu Boys, are playing on July 6th.The Bhundus were championed by Radio 1 DJs John Peel and Andy Kershaw in the Eighties and, with their infectious dance rhythms and constant gigging across the UK, became hugely popular in their own right but also spread the word about African music generally.Kudaushe himself is from Harare originally and the distinctive dance rhythms of Zimbabwe dominate the bands sound, though guitarist Tony Dudu from Guinea Bissau brings flavours from West Africa to the mix.Tickets are on sale at Spar and the Tower House gallery in town, priced £12, including a spread of food in the price.I guarantee – if you hear this band live, you will dance.
