The disappointment of the failed bid to obtain Big Lottery funding for the Community Centre is now behind us. The tiny group of volunteers who run the centre is now working flat out daily to come up with an affordable “Plan B” that finds space for the town library and other services and is acceptable to our other main grant source, the Welsh Assembly (Powys County Council is already fully committed to our plan, with money on offer to replace our leaky roof, for which we arevery grateful).
How appropriate then that the last one-off event booked into the centre for the time being was last Tuesdays very encouraging public meeting on the threatened closure of another important town facility, the leisure centre, when 480 Knightonians packed out the centre – the only venue in the region with the capacity for such a gathering.
Meanwhile our regular hirings and events will carry on for the time being, so all those who enjoy their Monday zumba, Welsh lessons, Slimming World, fitness, New Age Sport and karate, all those who attend Leg Club or would be lost without the twice-monthly markets and monthly auctions need not worry.
Well let everyone know the instant we have news about the centres future – and we hope that Knightonians will rally behind us as we work to ensure that perhaps the towns greatest asset is guaranteed a future in these difficult times.
